After taking possession, we spent several days with the folks from the yard who walked us through sail handling, plumbing, electrical and electronics. The boat is similar to many we’ve been on, in particular the ones we chartered in the past from the same yard, but there is still a lot to learn.

We had a small informal christening ceremony with a couple family members and a handful of friends, followed by a fun weekend sailing with them near La Grande Motte, France, where the yard is located.

After that, we set out on our shakedown cruise. Every boat Outremer makes is custom designed by the owners, and ours is no different. As a result, no two boats are the same and each boat has its unique set of issues that need be identified and fixed.

Here are some of the issues we found – some are fixed already, some will get addressed in November during the so called two week “Neuvage” period when the boat is back with the yard.

The fridge would occasionally just stop cooling. Europe is experiencing the hottest summer on record and France/Italy are no exception, so this was a bit of an issue. Thankfully, we have a freezer as well that has been consistently fine.

The boat has two cameras in the spreaders to help with close-quarter maneuvers, just like what you’d see on a car to assist with parking. The backwards looking one worked, the forward looking one not so much.

The starboard fresh water pump wasn’t mounted properly and was defect, and as a result it leaked water which caused it to shut down. It needed to be replaced.

The boat is spec’ed with three fishing rod holders. One of them is supposed to hold a BBQ, which, after having lived in the US for almost 30 years, is VERY important to me 😉 . Unfortunately none of the rod holders were secured properly to the deck and needed to be redone.

The raw water strainer in the engine room broke off from its fitting and needs to be replaced.

We expect to find a few more issues over the coming weeks but overall the boat is in good shape now and we can sail comfortably.

While the main focus of these last weeks has been on debugging the boat, we did have the pleasure to visit some really cool places:

Bussana Vecchia near San Remo

Cinque Terre – we hiked between Carniglia and Manarola. The days are spent sailing, reading and learning about the various systems and keeping the boat happy. I try to maintain my weekly workout schedule (at least two runs, core strength exercise to deal with my bad back, some resistance band stuff) which (obviously) takes much more effort than at home, especially the runs. They include launching the dinghy, finding a spot to land it and leave it without it getting stolen or damaged, finding a trail, trying not to get lost, returning to the dinghy, getting back to the boat and securing it again properly. Andrea and I had some incredible morning runs as we try to do this early before it gets too hot.

We plan to spend 1-2 days per week in marinas to clean the boat and stock up on groceries. The remaining nights we look to be at anchor which we much prefer over the marinas despite the additional hassle of getting on land, and occational we’ll spend a night or two at sea during longer passages. Similarly, we look to eat at restaurants 2-3 times per week and the rest of the time we cook on the boat. It’s equipped with a nice induction cooktop and a combo microwave/electric oven, both of which work really well. No gas inside the boat, only outside for the BBQ!

A recent night at anchor in front of Marina del Campo on Elba.

More soon!

We have our boat and we’re “shaking it down” in the Med!
